Hi, I am Kerrie and my personal experience with my Mother’s end of life journey inspired me to create Soul Script Cards. It was a difficult time because we were unsure of what to do or what to expect and we didn’t know how much time we had. Knowing what to say and when to say it was challenging for everyone. We found communication became key.
Mum was living with cancer, and as her transition was getting closer, the focus became acceptance, not only for herself but for those around her. We talked about how she envisioned her time left and we created a space of peace and reflection; low light, soft music, fresh scents and stillness. A place to share precious moments. The importance of seeing and speaking with loved ones became a priority as Mum felt like there was never enough time. Theuncertainty made her anxious so I asked Mum if she would like to write to anyone, and the idea brought a sense of relief. Mum could communicate exactly what she wanted to say to those she loved. The need for intense visits and the worry of continually saying goodbye was alleviated.
Finding writing materials for Mum was the biggest problem, I remember feeling so panicked. Nothing seemed fitting enough for the delicate task of scripting last words and having to go with generic blank cards hit particularly hard at this time. I found consolation in seeing how writing final sentiments was empowering for Mum and how it helped her with acceptance and gave her a sense of control. However, I couldn’t let go of the struggle I had buying cards and the idea of Soul Script emerged.
Soul Script cards were designed as multipurpose. For those in the end stages of life who want to write and leave a personal message, or in the case of those unable to write, having a loved one scribe may be a wonderful way to spend time. Not least of all, a most fitting approach to express feelings, gratitude or messages of love and support to those who are leaving us. There is great value in a well designed and scripted card. The images and words used have been carefully selected to encourage the writer with ideas or thoughts they might like to share.
The gesture of giving a card conveys many things, it can:
help express emotions that you can’t say easily.
deliver messages of heartfelt love or forgiveness
be a way of sharing stories and memories.
transfer personal thoughts and feelings.
carry a sincere and well thought out goodbye
inspire someone you love.
Personal messages communicating thoughts and feelings may help with emotions associated with loss. Leaving something for your loved ones they can hold in their hand and read countless times is something from you they’ll always have. To the person who is leaving, what a wonderful gift from family and friends as a collective. I am hopeful Soul Script Cards will make things a little easier for you or your loved one at this sensitive time. End of Life does not have to be the full stop, writing is an act of love that provides purpose and the opportunity to impart timeless sentiments.
